Extensions of time in IRIS: Form 8809 in the portal and A2A, Form 15397, and what cannot be extended

IRIS takes the automatic 30-day extension request (Form 8809) for the forms it files, through the Taxpayer Portal between January 1 and March 31 and through A2A as a submission of its own. It does not take the extension for Form 1099-NEC or W-2, the second 30 days, or the hardship waiver; those stay on paper. Form 15397, the extension for furnishing recipient copies, is faxed. This page sets out each route, the dates, and the acknowledgments to keep.

What an extension does and does not do

Form 8809 extends the date the information return is due to the IRS by 30 days. It does nothing for the recipient copy, which has its own extension (Form 15397), and nothing for the deposit of backup withholding or the Form 945 that reports it. The request has to be in by the return's own due date, and not before January 1 of the year the return is due; a separate request is made for each issuer TIN (Pub 5717 section 4). Extensions "cannot be corrected or replaced. If an extension is rejected, it must be retransmitted as an original request" (Pub 5718 section 7).

The automatic extension is granted on submission: the portal shows "an instant approval acknowledgment" when the request is complete, accurate and timely, and A2A returns an acknowledgment for the 8809 submission like any other. Keep it; it is the proof if a late-filing penalty notice arrives later.

Form 8809 in the Taxpayer Portal

  1. From the Dashboard, select Request Automatic Extension. The button is enabled only between January 1 and March 31.
  2. Choose Request a New Automatic Extension for one issuer, or Bulk Automatic Extension Request to upload a CSV built on the 8809 template (the template and its Formatting Guidelines download from that page).
  3. Pick a saved issuer or enter the issuer, choose whether the returns will be filed electronically or on paper, and tick the form types. A form whose due date has passed is disabled.
  4. Submit. The Automatic Extension Details page shows the approval; the Print button keeps a copy. The request also appears under View Submitted Forms with a Receipt ID and one of four statuses: A.E. Accepted, A.E. Rejected, A.E. Processing, A.E. In Transit. The Acknowledgement link downloads the acknowledgment.

The portal's own note: "Form 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation, is only allowed one nonautomatic 30-day extension of time, and filing must occur on a paper Form 8809." A request for NEC does not go through here.

Form 8809 through A2A

In the schema an extension is its own submission group: the transmission carries IRSubmission2Grp with IRSubmission2Header and Form8809Detail, and nothing else in that group (Pub 5718 2.1 and 7). Form 8809 submissions and 1099 submissions can travel in the same transmission as long as each submission holds one form type and one tax year and the transmission type is O. The Form 8809 IRIS page lists the 11 elements of the record and the business rules that apply to it (the S2H rules on the rules index); the Form 15397 page shows the four elements of its tax year 2026 record in the same group.

A rejected 8809 submission is not replaced; send it again as an original with a new UTID. An accepted one is final.

Form 15397: more time for recipient copies

The statement to the payee has its own due date and its own extension. Form 15397, Application for Extension of Time to Furnish Recipient Statements, is faxed to the Technical Services Operation, Attn: Extension of Time Coordinator, at 877-477-0572 (304-579-4105 international), and must arrive by the date the statements are due. If approved, the extension is generally 30 days (Pub 5718 7.2). The tax year 2026 schema includes a Form15397Detail record in the extension submission group; Publication 5718 for processing year 2026 still describes the request as a fax, so treat fax as the route until the IRS says otherwise. Each form page on this site has a statements section with the furnishing rules for that form (for example Form 1099-NEC).

Questions people ask

Does an extension stop the late-filing penalty?

For the 30 days it grants, yes. A return filed after the extended date is penalized from the original due date, in the tiers on the penalty page.

Can I request one extension for all my clients?

No. "Submit a separate extension request for each issuer tax identification number" (Pub 5717 section 4). The bulk CSV upload exists so a transmitter can submit many issuer requests in one file.

I missed March 31 in the portal. Is the 5498 extension lost?

The 5498 series is due May 31, and the request is timely until then, but the portal button is only enabled through March 31. After that the route is A2A or a paper Form 8809.

Does Form 8809 extend the date for giving the payee a copy?

No. That is Form 15397, by fax, by the statement due date.
